Saying hello

Ungkapan salam seperti Hi dan hello biasanya diikuti dengan phrase seperti how are you? atau how are things?

Dijawab dengan menggunakan  phrase  seperti “Fine”  dan kemudian balik bertanya dengan pertanyaan yang sama.

Perhatikan contoh.

Intan           : Hi Suzie. How are you?
Indri            : Fine thanks. And you?
Intan           : Yeah, fine thanks.

“Fine”, “Fine thanks”, “OK”, “OK thanks” all semuanya artinya sama.
untuk lebih formal kita bisa nmenggunakan “I’m very well, thanks”.
“Not bad thanks”, “Can’t complain” kurang positif.

Dalam situasi formal, kita juga dapat mengatakan :

  • “Good morning”
  • “Good afternoon”
  • “Good evening”.

Catat nih:

  • “Good morning” : dari pagi sampai makan siang.
  • “Good afternoon” : dari siang sampai awal petang (sekitar jam 6 sore)
  • “Good evening” :for the rest of the evening
  • “Good night” : digunakan ketika kita akan meninggalkan seseorang pada akhir petang atau ketika kita hendak bristirahat tidur.

Introducing yourself

Berikut adalah beberapa phrase sederhana yang dapat digunakan dalam memeperkenalkan diri sendir kepada orang lain.

  • “I’m …” (your first name / first name + surname)
  • “My name is …” (your first name / first name + surname)

Dalam situasi formal yang pertama kali kita sebutkan adalah  nama pertama (First nama)  dan kemudian surname. Namun dalam situasi informal yang diucapkan pertama adalah nama pertama (first name).

Orang lain mengatakan:

  • “Pleased to meet you.”
  • “Nice to meet you.”
  • “Good to meet you.”

Contoh.

Jembar                 : Hi, I’m Clare.
Bisrin                    : Pleased to meet you! I’m Dave.

Jembar                 : Good morning. I’m David Green.
Bisrin                    : Pleased to meet you. I’m John Harris.
Jembar                 :. Good to meet you.


Introducing other people

Dalam memperkenalkan orang lain kita dapat menggunakan kata-kata berikut:

  • “This is… (name of your friend).” Setelah itu jelaskan informasi mengenai orang tersebut, misal umurnya, orang tuanya dll.

“He’s a friend of mine.”
“He’s a friend of my brother.”
“He’s a colleague.”
“She’s my cousin.”

 

Contoh dialog

A: “John, this is Paul. He’s a friend of mine.”
B: “Hi Paul. Nice to meet you.”
Paul: “Good to meet you John.”

Deborah: “This is Sally. She’s my cousin.”
B: “Hi Sally. Pleased to meet you.”
Sally: “Pleased to meet you too.”

 

Asking Name, Address, and Phone Number

 

Ifra              : Excuse me, what is your name?

Naila           : Naila Rizka

Ifrfa             : And what is your address?

Naila           : 111 pete Street, Gold Tower Apartment, TBS

Ifra              : And what is your phone number?

Naila           : It is 555-6362.

Ifra              : Thank you very much.

Naila           : You’re welcome.

 

Ketika kita ingin menanyakan mengenai alamat kita dapat menggunakan kalimat berikut:

Gomar       : Excuse me, where do you live?

Ikrom         : I live on California,

atau lebih lengkap seperti;

I live at 111 Avenue Street, Gold Tower Apartment, California.

 

Untuk nanya nama seseorang kita bisa menggunakan kalimat dibawah ini:

  • Sorry, What is your first name?
  • Excuse me. How do you say your name again?
  • What is your last name, please?

 

Ingat: penggunaan “Hello” untuk situasi formal dan Hi situasi informal.


Berikut contoh surat pribadi yang berisi perkenalan diri,


Singapore, 25th October 2014


Dear Peggy,


It was so interesting to read your letter about yourself. I would like to be you pen pal.


Let me introduce myself. My name is David Zhang. You can call me Dave. I will turn 20 years old next week. I attend Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. I have an older sister and a younger brother. My older sister is a fashion designer. My younger brother is a high school student.


My hobby is watching movies. i am into action and comedy movies. My favorite actor is Robert Downey Jr. and my favorite actress is Jennifer Lawrence. I also like to travel. Indonesia is in my travel list. The first place that i want to visit in Indonesia is Bali. I heard that Bali has a lot of beautiful beaches.


I think that's all i can tell you about myself. Can't wait to hear from you.
